What a Power Outage Really Reveals

Today’s outage was most certainly an inconvenience.

I strongly hope it was also a reminder. A reminder that starting a business and running a household in the Caribbean requires a different kind of thinking.

Electricity powers more than lights. It powers refrigeration, internet, communication, productivity, healthcare, security, income and the list is long. When it disappears for hours, the effects spread quickly through homes, businesses, and entire communities.

It’s not fun understanding that emergencies happen. Infrastructure can fail, and restoration takes various time limits. And we sure do appreciate the crews working to restore service safely.

But today’s experience also exposed something deeper.

For many families, it meant changing plans, worrying about groceries, keeping children comfortable, or checking on elderly relatives and more.

For business owners, it meant lost sales, expensive generator fuel, uncertainty, and difficult decisions about inventory and operating costs.

A unpopular mention here is that, the outage didn’t create these challenges.

It revealed them.

Building a business in The Bahamas isn’t only about finding customers or opening your doors. It’s about preparing for the day something unexpected interrupts everything.

Today’s outage wasn’t just about losing electricity. It was a reminder of how many lives and livelihoods depend on it. So let’s definitely rethink some things if we can.
